The invisible file Shutdown Check lies on the root level of your startup disk.

This file is created when the Macintosh is started and "Warn me if computer was not shut down property" was selected in the General Controls control panel. When the Macintosh is shut down or restarted suddenly, however, the file remains, and at the next startup, the presence of this file will trigger the alert.

Additionally, in Mac OS 8.5 and later versions of the Classic Mac OS, Disk First Aid will launch automatically and your startup drive will be examined for any possible errors.

This file is only visible if you view your Mac over a network or use utilities software to make it visible.
