Pop-up windows existed from Mac OS 8 through to Mac OS 9.2.2. The idea was to have a window which sits at the bottom of the screen, with only its tab showing, only to show its data when a document was dragged over it, or when the tab was clicked on.

In Mac OS 8, only the name showed through. In Mac OS 8.5 and later versions of the Classic Mac OS, however, both the icon and the name showed through.

Windows could have its pop-up status toggled by choosing View as Pop-up Window in the View menu in the Finder.

The concept of a pop-up window no longer exists under Mac OS X.
