The Login Window appears the moment you are about to log into Mac OS X after it finishes booting up.
Mac OS X 10.0[]
In Mac OS X 10.0, the Login Window was very much bare-bones. You could only type in a user name and password; there was no iconic representation at all.
Later versions[]
In later versions of the Login Window, it was possible to view users as a list in icon view.
